Windows 8 - How to set a printer as your “default” printer..

In earlier versions of the Windows Operating Systems (XP-Vista-7) we simply went to start – control panel – devices and printers and then right clicked on the printer we wanted as our default printer.  Setting a printer as a default printer, means each time we give the print command, our “default” printer is the one that the computer will choose…

In Windows 8 it is a little different and I must admit it took me awhile to figure it out, but it is basically the same as earlier versions…(minus the start menu of course)
  • Press the Windows Key to go to the Start Screen (With all the windows 8 tiles)
  • Now, move your mouse to the far lower right until a list of “5” icons appear
  • Move the mouse up this lit (which Microsoft calls the Windows 8 Charm Bar – the icons from top to bottom are Search, ShareStartDevices & Settings – and these names will appear as your mouse hovers over each icon)
  • Now Click Search
  • When the action list appears (right side of your screen) Type Control Panel in the search box at the top
  • When you do Control Panel will appear on the left side of your monitor, click on it
  • Then click Devices & Printers (same list you saw in earlier versions of Windows appears)
  • When you see the printer you want as your default printer, hover your mouse over it, right click and choose “Set as Default Printer” from the action list

What do the "Function Keys" Do on a Keyboard?

Function Keys are those marked F1 - F12 Keys located across the top of most keyboards.  The following is a "generic" list of the commands those keys will do:

F1
Brings up the help screen

F2
Renames any file or folder that you have highlighted

F3
To search for a file or folder

F4
Display the address bar list in Windows Explorer

F5
Refresh the active window

F6
Cycle through screen elements in a window or on the desktop

F7
Doesn’t have any function in Windows, but will work for various commands in different application software programs

F8
This key is normally used to access Safe Mode (a trouble shooting mode that starts the computer with as few drivers as possible) when it is pressed during the computer’s boot up process.

F9
Doesn’t have any function in Windows, but will work for various commands in different application software programs

F10
Activate the menu bar in the active program

F11
This is a toggle key which allows you to go to Full Screen Mode on the Internet when using Browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Chrome & Firefox

F12
Doesn’t have any function in Windows, but will work for various commands in different application software programs

On some keyboards, including laptops and portable devices – the Function Keys will have “icons” on them – depending on the manufacturer, you will have to use your Fn key to activate either the Function Key or the Icon commands

Portable computers have Fn keys (because for their overall fewer numbers of keys).  In some cases the Fn key is a different style or color, so that corresponding other keys on the keyboard in that same color or style require you to use the Fn key to activate that specific command

How to uninstall software programs from your computer

If all you are trying to do is remove an icon from your desktop, but want to leave the software program on your computer, simply hover your mouse over the icon on your desktop – right click and choose “delete”  With many software programs, you will receive a quick message dialog box reminding you that you are only deleting the icon and that if you want to actually remove the software, this must be done from the control panel.

Why would you remove a software program from your computer..  Programs we never use can take up extra storage space and can slow our computer’s down – or maybe you are changing Anti-Virus providers – remember you can only have one Anti-Virus program on your computer at a time, so you must remove one before you add a new one…

The Windows operating system has a program utility that makes it easy to uninstall unused or unwanted and it’s easy to get to through your Control Panel.
  1. Left Click the "Start" button on your taskbar.
  2. When the Start menu appears, left Click "Control Panel."
  3. When the Control Panel appears – left click “Add/Remove Programs”
  4. It will take a moment and then list all software programs on your computer
  5. Scroll thru the list to find the software program you want to install
  6. Under each program on the right side, you will see a "Uninstall” button.
  7. Left click on the “Uninstall” button and it will remove the program and once removed it will no longer appear on the program list
  8. Once removed it will also remove icons from desktop, quick launch and taskbar)
  9. Repeat process for any other programs you want to uninstall.
Reminders…
Some programs include an option to change or repair the program in addition to uninstalling it, but many simply offer the option to uninstall. To change a program, click Change or Repair.
Some programs might ask you to enter an administrator password or confirmation before this can be done, so you’ll need to type the password or provide confirmation.

Windows 7 - turning the new style Taskbar off

The single most visible change in Windows 7 is the new “dock style” taskbar, which shows icons instead of buttons, with all application windows combined within a single button. To me it appears as though they’ve simply combined the Quick Launch and Applications Open Tasks into one area – personally once you get used to it, I think you’ll really like the new style… But many of you continue to email me to ask how to get it back to the “old look” so here is how you can “turn it off”:

Windows 7 Taskbar to XP/Vista Style:
  • First, right-click on any open area of the taskbar
  • Choose Properties from the menu
  • From the Taskbar buttons drop-down menu, you’ll want to choose “Never combine”, which will make every window show up as a separate button on the taskbar, or you could choose “Combine when taskbar is full”, which does just like it says
  • Now you should see the buttons show up with text labels like you are probably used to… but in the Windows 7 style
  • If you chose the “Use small icons” checkbox in the properties screen, the taskbar will actually shrink down to look very similar to Vista
  • The only problem is that the “pinned” icons are still sitting on the taskbar, which isn’t the same as Vista or XP, but you can easily remove all of them by right-clicking and choosing “Unpin this program from taskbar”. And now the taskbar looks and works very similarly to Windows Vista
If you wanted to be really silly, you can choose the “Windows Classic” theme under the Desktop \ Personalize section… but that would be taking it a little too far, I think.

I would urge you to at least give the new Windows 7 taskbar a try… it takes a little getting used to, but it’s a great new change..

Using the Quick Launch Bar

QUICK LAUNCH BAR (located on the Task Bar) Makes It Easier To Access & Open Your Favorite Applications Without Having To Return To Your Desktop…

You can add many of your frequently used programs on the Quick Launch Bar.. Once on the quick launch you can delete them from your desktop. Remember this in no way affects the software – you are only deleting the icon shortcut...

TO DISPLAY THE QUICK LAUNCH BAR

  • Right click on the taskbar – You must click on an empty spot on the taskbar or you get a different menu-so don’t click on an icon already on the taskbar
  • Be sure that you have “unlocked” your toolbars so that you can work with the Task Bar
  • Left Click TOOLBARS
  • Left Click QUICK LAUNCH from the pop-up menu

TO ADD NEW ICONS TO THE QUICK LAUNCH BAR

  • Simply Click and drag the icon to the Quick Launch Bar OR
  • Right Click on the Icon and Choose “Add to Quick Launch Bar”
  • The computer makes a copy of the icon when you do this
  • Once the Icon is on the Quick Launch, you can delete it from your Desktop

Add as many of your frequently used programs as you'd like on the Quick Launch Bar.. When you shorten the area (show only 3) all additional icons will appear in a cascaded list accessed by the arrows...

Once the icons are on the quick launch you can delete them from your desktop. Remember this in no way affects the software – you are only deleting the icon shortcut...

Adding Photos or Clip Art to Word Documents

There are so many ways to enhance documents created in Word, Excel and other programs – but one of the most common is to add photo’s we’ve taken or saved to the computer, or to add clip-art.

To “add” a photo or clip art you will go to “INSERT” on your menu bar or ribbon, which will give you the various choices of what you want to “INSERT”. In older versions of Word, you will go to:
  • Menu Bar
  • Insert
  • Pictures
  • Now choose File to find the photo you’ve saved in My Pictures OR Clip Art, OR Word Art, OR Symbols
  • Once you choose what you want to insert, left click on the photo or clip art, choose OK and it will appear on your document
IMPORTANT TIP:
In order to easily work with your photo, clip art, word art or symbol once it is on your document – immediately go the Text Wrapping Icon (looks like a little dog on a postage stamp) – when you left click on thus icon a list will appear – choose THROUGH – this allows you to now work with (size and or move) your photo, clip art, word art or symbol, where ever and how ever you would like…

If you forget to activate this option – as you move your photo or clip art – you will see your text being “pushed out of the way” and they won’t work together compatibly…

So take control and remember to activate the Text Wrapping Icon

Quick Launch

The handy “QUICK LAUNCH” toolbar is available in Windows XP, Vista & 7 (Operating System Software) allowing you “one click” to start a program (application software) without having to “minimize” the program you are currently using and going back to the desktop to activate it, and this is typically located to the right of the START BUTTON on the TASK BAR.

To be sure you can work with the QUICK LAUNCH or see it, you must UNLOCK the taskbar in order to work with it. Simply right click on blank space in the TASK BAR, you will see an action menu, be sure “Lock the TASK BAR is not checked off” – if it, highlight & left click on it, which removes the lock.

TO DISPLAY THE QUICK LAUNCH BAR
Right click on the taskbar – You must click on an empty spot on the taskbar or you get a different menu-so don’t click on an icon already on the taskbar
• Left Click TOOLBARS
• Left Click QUICK LAUNCH from the pop-up menu

TO ADD NEW ICONS TO THE QUICK LAUNCH BAR
Simply CLICK and DRAG them from your desktop to the Quick Launch Bar, assuming your TASKBAR is not locked (if you want you can remove the icons from your desktop-it doesn’t affect the software in any way)

TO SEE THE QUICK LAUNCH BAR DISPLAY LARGE ICONS
• Right click the Quick Launch Bar
• Left Click VIEW
• Left Click LARGE from the pop up menu

Many use the QUICK LAUNCH area only, so that they have NO ICONS on the desktop.. In addition to application icons, you can also add Internet Logos to the QUICK LAUNCH, when you have a website on the monitor, simply Click & Drag the website logo to the Quick Launch.

When you drag icons to the QUICK LAUNCH area – watch for the black insert line before dropping the icon, remember you cannot put one icon on top of another.
